Bridging the Gap: From Lab to Market in Cosmetic R&D Commercialization

At Cosmosciene®, we believe that nurturing the next generation of scientific talent is fundamental to the future of the cosmetics industry. In line with this commitment, Tami Nguyễn—Founder of Cosmosciene® and Innovation Director at Dermatech Vietnam—held a sharing session with students from the Faculty of Biotechnology at International University, VNU-HCMC, on November 15, 2024.

The event was centered on the theme, “Innovation in Cosmetics & Cosmeceuticals – From research to product commercialization.” The objective was to provide a practical, real-world perspective on the complex journey of transforming an innovative idea from a laboratory concept into a finished product ready for the consumer.

An overview of the seminar, which gathered a large audience of students from the Faculty of Biotechnology to learn about the cosmetic R&D and commercialization journey.

Session 1: The Foundational Principles of Cosmetic Innovation

The first part of the discussion focused on the critical R&D groundwork that precedes any successful product launch. This foundational stage is a meticulous process that begins long before a single ingredient is mixed. It involves conducting in-depth market research and analysis to understand consumer needs, which then informs the entire development strategy.

From there, the process relies on a deep understanding of scientific principles to guide formula development. This includes the careful selection of raw materials that meet stringent international standards and a clear understanding of the regulatory and functional distinctions between cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. The session concluded by outlining the final, iterative stages of product testing and refinement necessary to ensure efficacy and safety.

Session 2: The Path to Industrial Scale and Commercialization

The second session navigated the transition from a finalized lab formula to a market-ready product. This phase involves a distinct set of strategic and operational challenges. Key topics included developing a clear roadmap for transferring production from a laboratory scale to an industrial manufacturing environment.

Furthermore, the discussion provided an overview of the essential legal framework, covering product notification procedures, regulations for market circulation, and the protection of intellectual property. Finally, the session addressed the importance of implementing robust quality control systems and building an effective distribution network to successfully deliver the product to the end consumer.

Our Philosophy: Building Sustainable and Inspiring Beauty Ecosystems

This educational initiative is a direct reflection of our core philosophy: Science – Innovation – Humanity. At Cosmosciene®, we believe that R&D is not merely a tool for product development; it is the journey of creating intelligent, sustainable, and inspiring beauty ecosystems.

We are committed to partnering with the young generation of scientists and innovators who are actively shaping the future of Vietnam’s cosmetics industry. It is our hope that by sharing our experience, we can help empower them with a solid scientific foundation, a passion for discovery, and the ambitious spirit required to lead the industry forward.
